Three books

Books for the grown-ups

I have written three guides for the people around a young child — parents at home and teachers in a first classroom. They are written in plain language, not in the language of a training manual, because the person who needs them most is usually not a specialist.

Prevention is better than intervention. Nearly all of what these books ask of you happens before a child is old enough for it to be difficult.

Book 1

Different Early Childhood Development and Learning

For the teacher or parent working with a child whose development does not follow the usual path. Accommodating a child is the beginning; adding to what they can do is the point, and most of that work is ordinary, patient and done at play.

Book 2

Early Learning at Home

For the parent teaching at home, whether that is homeschooling outright or the hour a day around school. What to do, in what order, and why so much of it matters while the child is still small enough for it to be easy.

Book 3

First Steps to Success

The early ages and stages set out one at a time: what to expect, roughly when, and what a parent or teacher can do about it. What a child needs to be able to do before formal reading, writing and number work make sense — and how play builds it.
